Chunking Fairly: Multiplication and Division of Fractions
“Puzzled face.” , is probably your usual facial expression whenever your teacher is in front of you discussing the solutions on how to multiply and divide fractions.

Yes, I know, the struggle is real, why does it seem too difficult to solve fractions in class but it is easier to divide things in the real life set-up? How are we going to make it easier? Are there any ways on how to do it?
Perhaps, you are already waiting on how I would address this problem, but wait, let us chill out a bit through watching this video.
Alright! Did you at least enjoy the song? I hope you did because in this blog that is how you would enjoy learning multiplication and division of fractions. I will simplify every steps for you to easily understand the basics.
Multiplying Fractions
Let us start in the multiplication of fractions
There are 3 simple steps to multiply fractions
1. Multiply the top numbers (the numerators).
2. Multiply the bottom numbers (the denominators).
3. Simplify the fraction if needed.
Let us look at some illustrations on how to do it.

What about blocks? Here it is.

I knew it! It’s easy now for you right? Awesome!
Fractions and Whole Numbers
Now, let us proceed to the trickier part, what if the fraction will be multiplied to a whole number? An illustrated procedure is provided for you below.

Dividing Fractions
Are you now excited for dividing fractions? Let us start!
There are 3 Simple Steps to Divide Fractions:
Step 1. Turn the second fraction (the one you want to divide by) upside down
(this is now a reciprocal).Step 2. Multiply the first fraction by that reciprocal
Step 3. Simplify the fraction (if needed)

If you want an example from a real life set-up, an example below is for you.
1/6 ÷ 1/2
Now look at the pizzas below … how many “1/6th slices” fit into a “1/2 slice”?
| How many | ![]() |
in | ![]() |
? | Answer: 3 |
Do you want a more complicated example? Check this out.

I know illustrations are kind of boring, below is a video that you can watch to see how division of fractions take place.

A song can be highly entertaining for some, so here is a song about division of fractions for you.
Fractions and Whole Numbers
Example:
2/3 ÷  5
Make 5 into 5/1 :
2/3 ÷  5/1
Then continue as before.
Step 1. Turn the second fraction upside down (the reciprocal):
5/1 becomes 1/5
Step 2. Multiply the first fraction by that reciprocal:
2/3 × 1/5 = 2 × 1/3 × 5 = 2/15
Step 3. Simplify the fraction:
The fraction is already as simple as it can be.
Answer = 2/15

“That was easy!” I hope these are the words that you uttered after reading this blog’s content on how to multiply and divide fractions.Â

Multiplying and dividing fractions seemed to be a problem at the beginning but like what this quotation said, every problem has a solution and this time, another solution was made to solve your struggle in dealing with fractions. Thank you and I hope you will read my next blog about multiplication and division of mixed fractions.
¡adiós! ¡nos vemos más tarde!
